תיאור

Part of a ketubba. Bride: Luʾluʾa bt. Shemarya (לולוה, meaning Pearl). Groom: Yiṣḥaq Kahana the cantor. Dated 4[8]44 AM = 1083/84 CE. Location: ‘on the river D[…]’. Marriage payments: 5 + 12 = 17. Above the ketubba text is a poem in Hebrew celebrating the marriage. Above this poem are a selection of biblical verses in Hebrew written perpendicular to the text below. These verses (Jeremiah 13:18, Ezekiel 21:31, Job 34:10, Jeremiah 10:10, Nahum 1:6, Jeremiah 10:11, Daniel 2:21) are headed by a title in Judaeo-Arabic saying ‘verses read before giving an astrological decision’, and are a secondary addition to the document having nothing to do with the marriage contract. He who finds a wife fin]ds good / [and obtains favor] of the Lord.  (b) I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; My soul shall rejoice / in my God;  For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, etc.  (c) And all the people that were in the gates / and the elders, said: "We are witnesses,” etc.  
  4. [...] And He who uplifts them will adorn them with joyful occasions. He will make them glad and rejoice. / He will delight them in their marriage (or: in their ingathering). 
  5. [COLUMN A, lines 5-11.] Joy is fixed / and blessing is impressed / and pleasure is eternally bound / and exultation delighted / [and] good in abundance / [to] the esteemed [groo]m / [and to] the modest [bride]. [COLUMN B, lines 5-13.] In the name of my Creator and my Maker / my strength, my refuge and my fortress / my trust from my youth / may He remember me for good / and in His salvation adorn me / and make great my adornment / and bandage my fracture / and make for me a diadem of His strength / and crown me with His crown.
