תיאור
This poetic rendition of the Amidah survived in the Cairo Geniza on folios that were written by three different scribes of varying caliber; perhaps one page was lost, or they were copied by a teacher and a student. It appears likely that the text is Palestinian in origin and has its roots in centuries-old forms that were popular in that community. It follows the skeletal outline of the Amidah that was shared by Rabbanite Jews, and it testifies to the instability of the Jewish liturgy in the medieval period. It is followed by a text for Purim (also included here), which may mean that it was part of an originally larger liturgical collection. Unbracketed ellipses indicate lacunae in the manuscript. (Information from Posen Library; NB translation only covers pages 1–4)

In the name of the Merciful One (Psalms 51:17). O Lord, open my lips and let my mouth declare Your praise (Psalms 51:17). You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, our God and the God of our forefathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. You are the great, mighty and revered God, God on high, creator of the heavens and earth, our shield and the shield of our forefathers. Happy are those people who await your succour. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, Shield of Abraham. Mercifully revive those who sleep in the ground and bring down the blessings of rain upon the earth. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, Reviver of the Departed. Heavenly groups invest you with honour and those well-reared below clothe you with strength. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, the Holy God. Inform our minds with knowledge of what is right so that we stray not from your precepts. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, Provider of Knowledge. Direct our hearts, those of a righteous nation who are always faithful, to perform your will. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, who takes pleasure in repentance. Wipe out of your memory the sins of our youth and forgive our iniquities. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, always ready to forgive. Remember [the deeds of the forefathers?], redeem their children and speedily restore us. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, Redeemer of Israel. Swiftly heal the sickness of your people and bring about [full?] recovery. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, Healer of his people Israel. Send down the purity [?] of rain this year and also a redeemer [?] to give thanks to your name. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, Bringer of blessing to each year. May the scattered of your people fly back as a cloud, just as doves return to their dovecotes. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, Gatherer of his scattered people, Israel. Deal justly, fairly and mercifully with your community. Deliver an upright judgement on the poor and the destitute. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, Lover of Justice. Blot out the wayward from the book [?] of life and offer no satisfaction to those who challenge the faith. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, Humbler of the Impious. Take account of the devoted intensity of the upright and bring joy to the hearts of those who sincerely attach themselves to you. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, Security for the Righteous. Return in mercy to Jerusalem your city; may the throne of David be re-established within. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, God of David and Builder of Jerusalem. Hearken swiftly to our orderly prayer, our measured thought and our painful cry. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, Heeder of Prayer. Turn again to your altar in our days so that we can make the offerings we owe and you can find favour in the Temple worship. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, the one whom we revere and worship. We give thanks to you, who are our God and the God of our forefathers; we bend the knee and prostrate ourselves before you, our Father and King, our Rock of Eternity, our Master of Peace, for all the loving and merciful kindnesses that you have bestowed on us and for what you have done for us and for our fathers before us. Those who seek you will praise you continually at all times, with lips, and tongue, and heart and gut. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, the Good One whom we must thank. May the Lord our God bless us. Take care of us and be gracious to us. Grant us your blessing of peace. You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, Creator of Peace. You alone are the Lord. You made the heavens, the highest heavens, and all their host, the earth and everything upon it, the seas and everything in them. You keep them all alive, and the host of heaven prostrate themselves before You. You are the Lord God who chose Abram, who brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans, and changed his name to Abraham. Finding his heart true to you. (Nehemiah 9:5–8) . . . May you mercifully will it, our God and the God of our forefathers, that you . . . and inspire us, both us and all Israel [and draw us near?] to your reverence, as you wish, and to your Torah . . . and to perform your will, as You wish, amen. Lord, teach me to do Your will, for You are my God. Let Your gracious spirit lead me on level ground. For the sake of Your name, O Lord, preserve me; as You are beneficent, free me from distress. As You are faithful, put an end to my foes; destroy all my mortal enemies, for I am your servant. (Psalms 143:10–12) May the words of my mouth and the prayer of my heart be acceptable to You, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. (Psalms 19:15)
[We thank you] for the miracles, rescue, and redemption that you performed for our forefathers through Mordechai and Esther in those days and at this time, when the wicked Haman arose against them and sought to destroy, kill and wipe out all the Jews from young to old, toddlers and women. You in your infinite mercy ruined his plan and nullified his intent, bringing retribution upon him and hanging him and his sons on the tree. So do perform for us, Lord our God, miracles and mighty deeds and we shall give thanks to your name, our king, selah. It is good to praise the Lord, to sing hymns to Your name, O Most High (Psalms 92:2). You, our Eternal God, are the essence of praise, the Good One whom we must thank.
