  1. [God], whose holy Temple and place will be rebuilt amidst the righteous; who grants
  2. his adherents victory over his enemies and sustains the reign of their kings; who
  3. hearkens to those whose intentions are sincere, and accepts the prayers of those who are close to him;
  4. who accepts the sacrifices and prayers of the righteous and their kings
  5. by granting his blessing to them in this world and the next; who accepts the gratitude of
  6. those who thank him with sincerity for the benefits that he has rendered to them; who
  7. always grants well-being to his adherents, his sincere friends, and his pious devotees.
  8. When the most illustrious vizier (al-wazīr al-ajall)
  9. Yaʿqūb ibn Yūsuf, may God sustain his high station, showed me a translation
  10. made by a certain Jewish translator of the "Book of Prayers and
  11. Blessings" following the prescribed laws,
  12. which [that translator] translated from the language of the Hebrews into the language of the Arabs,
  13. employing both Arabic language and script, neither he nor the company of
  14. thinkers—consisting of litterateurs who deal with Kalām and
  15. philosophy as well as physicians present at the session in which religions are discussed (majlis al-kalām ʿalā al-sharāʾiʿ), [all of whom] meet regularly at his court—

  1. and scorned the entire nation, in addition to the
  2. ignominy and shame which those Rabbanites and their adversaries present at his court
  3. endured as a result of what was said thereafter.
  4. Fortunate is the nation that has such a core of religious law
  5. and such an ordained body of prayers and blessings, with
  6. the unsurpassed intricacies of meaning and the most eloquent entreaty
  7. and supplication with which it [the nation] approaches its God. In particular, they claim wisdom for their
  8. rational and revealed laws, as adduced by what they found
  9. written about them in the Torah: "Observe them
  10. and implement them because they are your wisdom in the presence of the
  11. nations. When they hear these laws they shall say
  12. 'Surely, that great people (tribe) is a
  13. wise and discerning nation.'" And [see also] what is written after that in the
  14. two subsequent verses,
  15. "For what [other] great nation has a God so close at hand as the Lord our Master
  16. whenever we call upon him? Or what great nation has" (Deut 4:6–8).

  1. "such just laws and statutes as [are contained in] this Torah
  2. which I have set before you this day" (Deut 4:8).
  3. I was saddened by what I heard and grieved by what I saw.
  4. [margin: I was compelled by zeal to defend God and his holy name that had been profaned by Gentiles, and I said:]
  5. The scholars (ʿulamāʾ) and learned men (fuqahāʾ) of every nation
  6. profess statements and concepts that the common people do not understand,
  7. how much more so the concepts of men learned in the heavenly teachings
  8. and those of scholars versed in the prophetic books, as well as of those who transmit the
  9. rational and revealed laws and the traditions of the righteous prophets
  10. with unquestionable proofs and clear-cut signs.
  11. The Scriptures have attested to these things, and a multitude of
  12. intellects have confirmed them, with the result that men of understanding prescribed
  13. t[h]at these things constitute divine wisdom, there being nothing else beside them, as
  14. was confirmed by his [God's] unambiguous and truthful book in those
  15. previously mentioned verses, as well as by others found
  16. in the Scriptures. Therefore,
  17. in order for the most illustrious vizier, the crown of the vizierate, and his scholars (ʿulamāʾ) to do what is just,

  1. it is incumbent upon him not to pass judgment
  2. basing himself on those who are not well versed in the teachings
  3. of the traditions of the prophets, peace be upon them; the intricacies of their meanings;
  4. the rules pertaining to the prayers, the times (awqāt) when they take place, and the portions (fuṣūl) [from the Torah];
  5. the method of performing the bowings (rukūʿ) and prostrations (sujūd); the distribution of the blessings
  6. and the reasons for them; the distinction between what is a commandment (farḍ) and
  7. what is a tradition (sunna), what is mandatory and what is permitted, the fixed order of prayer (al-qānūn minhu), and what is
  8. supererogatory. I, one of the disciples of their disciples,
  9. wish to discuss and explain this matter in such a way
  10. that it cannot be disputed by the minds of men of understanding of any
  11. nation. [This discussion], following a preface (muqaddimah) similar to an introduction (madkhal) or
  12. isagoge, will provide proof of what
  13. the traditions of the prophets, peace be upon them, have conveyed to us. [I will write] in
  14. Arabic script and language, to the extent allowed by my command of the language of the
  15. Arabs, relying on the might, power, success, and aid granted by God.
