Letter from ʿAbd al-Karīm b. al-Ḥasan b. Dāwud to his "son" the Abū l-Qāsim Hibat Allāh b. Muḥammad Ibn al-Aʿmā, probably in Ibrīm (the location is not specified in the address, but the first line of the letter appears to address him as الامير ابريم, the amīr (of) Ibrīm). Concerns business transactions in garments, materia medica and spices, and small items such as a brass lock and beads. Alternative readings (ASE): in r5, r16, and r18, instead of عينة, it is possible to read عيبة (ʿayba, a container or bag, often of leather, used for storing and transporting garments, common in the Geniza mercantile letters). in r9, instead of ارجو ان, and in r12, instead of زعفران, it is possible to read ارجوان (urjuwān; this can refer to red/purple dye and the dyed textiles themselves). In r16, instead of هو تك, it is possible to read مرتك (martak; this is litharge or lead oxide). In r19, instead of تجاز اسل, it is possible to read لاني اسر بـ[ـقضاها] or a similar phrase ("and I shall be happy to carry it out"), as in doc. 11 (PGPID 40160). In v5, instead of التبان, it is possible to read انسان, and in v6, instead of وفيه, it is possible to read وقية ("inquire for me after the son of a man named Muslim al-Farrāsh; he owes me an ounce of gold. . ."). In v7, instead of الرابح, it is possible to read الواح ("he went out to the oasis"). Al-wāḥ can refer to a specific oasis or may be the general term for the oasis region of western Nubia (see al-Bakrī, https://shamela.ws/book/23849/642). Khan, Qaṣr Ibrīm, doc. 29.

  2. كتبت اليك يا ولدى العزيز على الامير ابريم اطال الله بقاك وادام عزك
  3. وتاييدك وسعادتك وسلامتك كتبت عن حال سلامة وعافية
  4. لله الحمد على ذلك اعلمك يا ولدى انى كنت قد انفذت اليك
  5. العينة اول مرة بعد ان سالت الامير كنز الدولة ادام عزه
  6. وانفذها مع امين انسان على انه يلتقى بعبد الباقى <ويسلمها> له
  7. فمشى الى بعض الطريق ورجع وبقيت عندنا الى يومنا
  8. هذا وقد انفذت بها اليك مع عبد الباقى وفيها تسعة
  9. ارطال لكنى ارجو ان وفيها ارجو ان نقمى وارجو ان احضر واخصكم
  10. بتسعة ارطال ونصف بدينار وقد بعت الفراش بدينار ونصف
  11. والغلالتين بنصف دينار صار الجميع دينارين فسلمت الى صاحب الوبر
  12. ثلاثة دنانير وانفذت بها اليك واخذ له بدينارين الزعفران واخذ
  13. بدينار نعمى ملون واخذت لك زباد بقيراطين واخذت شموع بقيراط
  14. واخذت بقيراط عود وقيراطين زعفران واخذت بقيراطين خرز
  15. واخذت بقيراط ونصف قرفة واخذت بقيراط غرز ووسب وروى
  16. بقيراط ونصف وعينة وقفل نحاس ربع دينار وهو تك وخرز
  17. سدس دينار وقد دفعت الى عبد الباقى سدس دينار غير اجرة
  18. العينة الباقى عندك من ثمن دينار احبت اعلامك ذلك
  19. لتقف عليه وما كانت لك من حاجة فاكتب اليه بها تجاز اسل

  1. In the name of God, the Merciful and Compassionate.
  2. I have written to you, my son, who is dear to me, the commander (at) Ibrīm, may God prolong your life and cause your strength,
  3. your support, your happiness and your good health to endure. I am writing to you in a state of wellness and good health,
  4. praise be to God for that. I inform you, my son, that I had sent you
  5. the advance consignment immediately after asking the commander, Treasure of the Dynasty (Kanz al-Dawla), may He cause his power to endure, (to dispatch it)
  6. and he sent it with a reliable person indicating that he would meet ʿAbd al-Bāqī and deliver it to him.
  7. He went on part of the way, but then returned, and it (the advance consignment) has remained with us until
  8. this day. I have (now) sent it to you with ʿAbd al-Bāqī. It contains nine
  9. raṭls. I hope I shall come and assign to you
  10. nine and a half raṭls for a dīnār. I have sold the mattress for a dīnār and a half
  11. and the two tunics for half a dīnār. This made a total of two dīnārs. I handed over to the fur merchant
  12. three dīnārs and sent them to you. He took for himself the saffron for two dīnārs. He also took
  13. for a dīnār a coloured luxury item, and I took for you civet perfume for two qīrāṭs. I took candles for a qīrāṭ.
  14. I took for a qīrāṭ aloes and for two qīrāṭs saffron. I took for two qīrāṭs beads.
  15. I took for a qīrāṭ and a half cinnamon. I took for a qīrāṭ sprigs and herbs, and a rope for binding a load
  16. for a qīrāṭ and a half, and a sample, and a brass lock, a quarter of a dīnār, in the form of a small coin, beads,
  17. a sixth of a dīnār. I paid to ʿAbd al-Bāqī a sixth of a dīnār apart from the fee for
  18. the credit that would remain with you of an eighth of a dīnār. I wanted to inform you of this
  19. so that you are aware of it. If you have any requests, write to him concerning them and they will be carried out. I pray to God

  4. Write to me if anything untoward comes up and you want some request to be carried out.
  5. Indeed let me know so that I can deal with it. You ask concerning the straw-dealer called
  6. Muslim “Is my bed, which has gold in it, with him?” I have been told that he has come
  7. upon something lucrative. Best wishes. Our sufficiency is God. What a fine keeper is He!
