- Take some of the ground lac with the sticks stripped away. Kn[ead it with some] of the
- clarified bran water. Grind it in a mortar, as a paste, very finely until it becomes like
- an ointment. Extract it with the bran water through a sieve of many holes until
- the lac sediment runs clear. Take the silk that has been treated with forty
- dirhams of splintered alum after it has soaked in the alum and water for a night and a day,
- and proceed to wash off the alum and wring it. Take half of the water containing
- the lac extract and place it in a copper vessel. Light a fire beneath it until it boils and splits,
- then skim off the foam. Lower the silk into it and reduce the fire. Do not cease turning it
- until it drinks up (the dye) and the water becomes clear. Take it out and rinse it in ample water, and do not. . . .
