Letter from the Nubian eparch Uruwī in Ibrīm to Abū l-Ṭāhir. Uruwī addresses Abū l-Ṭāhir as "my son," here a term of endearment to a younger man rather than an indication of biological relationship. Uruwī acknowledges receipt of gifts sent by Abū l-Ṭāhir through his companion Ibrāhīm. Uruwī praises Ibrāhim and says he has given him a slave girl (jāriya). Uruwī also sends a jāriya and her two children to Abū l-Ṭāhir through Ibrāhīm. He refers to a prior incident involving a slave girl (jāriya) whom Uruwī sold without consulting with Abū l-Ṭāhir. It seems Uruwī is trying to acquire that slave girl (waṣīfa) back (?): He refers to a messenger sent in connection with her, and reassures Abū l-Ṭāhir not to worry. The girl, he says, is "like a jewel." Uruwī had also sent a lantern (sirāj) to Abū l-Ṭāhir's mother. The mother is traveling, but Uruwī says her slave (ʿabd) will convey the lantern to Abū l-Ṭāhir. From the greetings, we learn that Uruwī has two wives. PG Khan, Qasr Ibrīm, doc. 17.

- وصل كتاب ولدي اطال الله بقاه وادام تاييده وسعادته وسلامته ونعمته
- وقراته وفهمت مضمونه وسرنى حسن سلامته وعافية ووصلنى ما
- تفضلت به على يد صاحبه ابرهيم ولا عدمته ولا خلوت منه
- وتعين على مكافته ويكثر فى الناس مثله وقد سيرت صحبة
- ابرهيم برسم حق العين جارية ومعها ولدين فبسط لى بالعذر
- ومهما كانت لك حاجة فعرفنى اعلم ان ما كان لك على دين عن انني
- الجارية قد بعتها بخياري فعن ايش تكلمت فيا وانا ان شا الله
- اسيرها لك وقد راى صاحبيك رسولي الذي سيرته بسبب
- الوصيفة فلا تكون على قليل هم فالخير يكون ان شا الله وكانها
- الغسيسن جوهر كانت صاحب الخيل يقبل يدها الكريمة ويسال
- عن حضرته والمسول من مولاي يتفضل وينعم على عبدها قروه
- امرتيها بخير فلا زالت حضرته متفضلة

- In the name of God, the Merciful and Compassionate.
- The letter of my son—may God prolong his life and cause his support, his happiness, his safety and wellbeing to endure —has arrived
- and I have read it and noted its contents. I was pleased to hear that you are well and in good health. I have received
- what you have graciously given me by the hand of your companion Ibrāhīm. May I not be deprived of him or left alone without him.
- He should be rewarded. May there be many like him among the people. I have sent a slave girl with
- Ibrāhīm (as payment) for what is owed together with her two children. Forgive me (for the delay).
- Let me know whatever you need. I know that I owe you a debt arising from the fact that
- I sold the slave girl of my own accord (without consulting you) and (I know) what you have spoken about me. God willing,
- I shall send her to you. Your two companions have seen my messenger whom I sent in connection with
- the slave (al-waṣīfa). Do not have any worries. All will be well, God willing. She (the slave girl)
- is a beauty who is like a jewel. The Master of the Horses kisses your honourable hand and makes a request to
- your honour. What is requested from my lord is that you do goodness and kindness to your slave (the Master of the Horses).
- His (i.e., of the Master of the Horses) two wives send their best wishes. You are always so kind.

- I have given a slave girl to your companion Ibrāhīm who suits him well.
