Legal document from the high court (al-Bāb al-ʿĀlī) in Cairo. In Arabic script. Dated: 28 Dhū l-Qaʿda 1122 AH = 18 January 1711 CE. Judge: Muṣṭafā (more of his name may be legible from the seal). In which the amīr Yūsuf Odabaşı of the janissary regimemnt of the citadel (طائفة مستحفظان قلعة مصر المحروسة) purchases for himself, in the presence of al-Ḥājj Sulaymān b. ʿAbdallāh of the janissaries of اليقحى(??) in Ḥārat al-Yahūd and al-Shihābī Aḥmad b. ʿAbdallāh and the dhimmī(?) Ibrāhīm ʿAbdallāh of the janissaries of the citadel, from the Jewish woman Raḥel bt. Nissim b. Yūsuf al-Yahūdī al-Lāwī known as al-Shāṭir, a property (makān) located in Cairo, Ḥārat Zuwayla, Ḥārat al-Yahūd, at the top of Darb al-Rāʾiḍī(?) also known as Darb al-Maghāriba, located near to the Maghribī synagogue. Her ownership right is established by a prior document from the al-Ṣāliḥiyya al-Najmiyya court dated 13 Shawwāl earlier in the same year (1122 AH, i.e., 7 October 1710 CE). The property and its boundaries is briefly described. There follows a chain of prior ownership: it seems that Raḥel purchased it from Barukhʾel (باروخيل) b. Hārūn al-Yahūdī al-Istānbūlī, as established in a document from the Bāb al-Shaʿriyya court dated 18 Ṣafar of the same year (1122 AH, i.e., 18 April 1710 CE). The price agreed upon for the sale is 6000 medins, it seems paid in cash on the spot. It seems that it was paid in an equivalent (bi-muʿāwaḍa) of 49 dinars and 20 riyāls(?), and the remainder paid in medins. Six witnesses sign at the bottom. At the top there is the judge's tawqīʿ and seal. On verso there are filing notes in Judaeo-Arabic and Arabic script: - חוגת בייע כניס אלצוגיירה אלדי באעתהא בנת אל שאטר מרת עובדייא אל חשאש - סעד אבו אלעפייה . . - حجة مكان بخط حارة اليهود بارس درب . . . . الامير يوسف From the first note, we learn that the seller Raḥel was known as the wife of ʿOvadya al-Ḥashshāsh, and that the property was not simply any building but the synagogue known as al-Ṣughayyira.
