Deposition. Location: Minyat Zifta. Dated: Monday, 18 Sivan 1486 Seleucid = 9 June 1175 CE. In which two persons testify to the poverty of a man named Sulaymān b. Ḥasan, who had been condemned to imprisonment for insolvency when his Jewish debtor had brought him before a Muslim court. Signed by five witnesses: Sheʾerit b. Yakhin ha-Kohen; Ṣedaqa b. Hillel ha-Kohen; Berakhot b. Yakhin; Yoshiyya b. David; Nadiv b. David. (Information from Mediterranean Society, I, p. 204)

  1. We the undersigned witnesses on this wr[it] state
  2. that we know the situation of Sulaymān b. Ḥasan, and that he is poor,
  3. with few possessions. We do not know if he possesses any real estate or cash. He owes
  4. Baqā ha-Levi b. Ṣāliḥ three and a half dinars,
  5. which the latter has claimed from him in a Muslim court. He is not able to pay the fee for the police guard.
  6. So they threw him into prison. He has asked us, the undersigned, to report
  7. what we know about his situation. This was on the same Monday
  8. the eighteenth of Sivan 1486 (June 9, 1175) in the city of Minyat Ziftā, so that it be
  9. a conveyance of right and a proof. Sheʾerith ha-Kohen b. Yakhin ha-Kohen (who) r(ests in) E(den);
