תיאור

Verso is a literary text in Hebrew in the hand of Yosef b. Yaʿaqov Rosh ha-Seder. Recto is a page covered with his musings and notes in Judaeo-Arabic. (I) After suffering various difficulties (shadāʾid) and being delivered by God, he now intends to change his name. He considers Neḥemya b. Yisraʾel, because God comforted him (niḥam-ya) and because Yaʿaqov is Yisraʾel. For his kunya, he considers Abū l-Suʿūd, but then decides on Abū l-Faraj b. Abū l-Maʿālī, "because neḥama is faraj... and because sherara is maʿālī." He selects the nisba Ibn al-Daskarī, "because the family of my father is from Daskara" (most likely Dastagird, but there are at least three other possibilities). He ultimately reconsiders part of his plan, resolving to change only his own name and to leave his father's as is, yielding Abū l-Faraj Neḥemya b. Yaʿaqov Ibn al-Daskarī. See Lipa Ginat, "Rabbi Yosef Rosh ha-Seder," p. 45 for a brief discussion of the significance of this fragment. (II) With a different pen and/or ink, he drew a diagram and captioned it, "This is the appearance of the eight seals which are on the door of the warehouse from the outside. As for [...] they are written on the inside on the top of [...], and in the [...] from the inside." On the right side, there is a long and interesting list of items, partially crossed out, possibly an inventory of the same warehouse? Merits further examination.
