Legal document in Arabic script. Fragmentary (right side only). Dating: Unclear if this is the date of the document itself, but the document mentions the year 955 AH, which is 1548/49 CE (l. 11). The judge is al-ḥākim al-shamsī Shams al-Dīn [...]. The document mentions several people, notably Yehuda b. Avraham b. Yosef Castro, presumably identical with the merchant Yehuda Castro known from CUL Or.1080 J133, ENA 2808.2, ENA NS 54.7 (though this seems too late), T-S NS 320.127, and probably other Geniza documents. Also mentions Isḥāq b. Isrāʾīl b. Yaḥyā al-Yahūdī. Also mentions al-Raʾīs Muḥammad; certification (taṣdīq) of claims; various large sums of money (including 800 medins/niṣfs and al-dhahab al-sulṭānī); a ship; and Istanbul (اسطنبول). There is one witness signature preserved here, of [...] al-Ḥanafī. Needs further examination.

In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate

At the Sharīʿa court in [the po]rt of Alexandria,

]In the presence of our master, the Shamsī judge, Shams al-Dīn[…]

May his rulings be exalted are his rulings and […], the raʾīs Muḥammad […] acknowledged
-
]al-Rashīdī, the lawful acknowledgement, voluntarily, while in a state in which his [legal capacity] is valid,
-
]a lawful acknowledgement to the muʿallim Yehuda b. Abraham Castro, son of Yosef b. […]
-
]of delivering to him an amount of [silver ha]lves of the Sulaymānī coinage,
-
]being eight hundred and twenty halves, amounting to him thereby in total
-
]and the right of disposal in that, and that this constitutes a statement of his liability,

]over the share of the ra’īs Muḥammad, by right of the quarter-share, in the ship (?) al-Ghullayn (?)[

]in the year nine hundred and fifty-five, and eight hundred halves and nine[

]The muʿallim Isḥāq b. Isrāʾīl b. Yaḥyā, the Jew, attests[…]

]to him with that lawful attestation. And they mutually attested also that the a[mount]

]the sum of which is one thousand halves, one hundred and eighty-one halves, and[

]sixty halves; and that the last thing the raʾīs Muḥammad leased[

]was the aforementioned ship from the city of Istanbul to the port of Alexandria,

]with anchor and hoisting of cargo, whenever it carried the Sultanī gold[

]and that the aforementioned muʿallim Yehuda shall reckon with the aforementioned raʾīs Muḥammad,

]and they mutually attested to all of that, the lawful attestation; and that the[…]

]aforementioned in the said ship, in selling and buying and ..[

]not except with his knowledge. The raʾīs Muḥammad attests to that attest[

]that he fulfills, and he requested the ruling in the lawful agency.

]And when that was completed and perfected with witnesses, as is customary, and […]

]may God render their testimony and its issuance [good]

]according to what each of them testified, upon confidence in that it is a valid judgment

]fulfilling its legal conditions and its safeguarded, observed obli[gations,

]with trust in the Generous for that and through Him; and [it was] witnessed on the date above, and [

Barakāt b. ʿĪsā al-Ḥanafī testified against this — may God show him kindness.
