תיאור

Late letter in Judaeo-Arabic (dated, but confusingly) to Ḥayyim ha-Kohen and Ḥayyim Ṭaliṭ(?) or Shlīsh. The date makes use of 1000 symbol V to indicate the millennium: Vה = five thousand. Oddly, the letter sender then appears to combine ת (400) with the western Arabic numeral 5, yielding a potential reading of 6 Shevat 5405 AM. The corresponding year 1645 CE does not seem very likely given the paleography and high degree of paper preservation, therefore, the ligature before 5 should also be considered as ק– possibly another multiple: ק5 = five hundred. The year 1745 CE seems more likely, but this reading is also tentative and should be checked against the lifespans of the people mentioned. Requires further research. MCD.
