Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

  7. 57LetterAIU VII.E.98

Letter from Moshe Yehoshuaʿ Ashkenazi, in Alexandria, to Alpalas y Sahlon, in Cairo (spelled Cairro). Dated: Sunday, 21 Adar II 5480 AM, which is 1720 CE. In Ladino. There is a great deal about business transactions and trouble with the customs office, specifically with a certain accursed Jirjis. […] Moshe seems aggravated: "as there are other things to be doing, I will be brief" (ll. 29–30), and "I have carried out a thousand contrabands but have never had so much trouble as with this one" (in standardized Spanish spelling: mil contra bandos hice nunca me tomé tanto ṣaʿar como esto") (l. 33). See "Alpalas y Sahalon" tag for other documents from the same group.

Letter in Ladino, sent by Isaac Baronito to his father Abraham Baronito, Mitzrayim. […] Isaac addresses his father as "the crown of my head" (la corona de mi cabeza). It concerns books with "glosses in his hand": sabreis komo he hallado ke tienen los libros haga'ot eskeritura de su mano yme recelo y si kereis aun kon todo esto ke os los envie os los enviare mas ha de saver ke no los vendas a ningun modo por amor de la dicha ke tiene ... y si keres os man dare los libros komo kedamos haya de ser kon este partido ke no los haveis de vender a ningun por la razon. […] He sends regards on behalf of Rachel and Michael; Gutwirth suggests these are Isaac's daughters. And he mentions in the penultimate line "las encomiendas de mi parte y de parte de Esther que la cono[ces]"; Gutwirth suggests that Esther is his wife.

Bifolio from a ledger of business accounts. In Ladino and western Arabic numerals. Dated: 26 Kislev [5]503 or [5]505 AM, corresponding to 1742 CE or 1744 CE. […] List of purchases and sales or "copia de compras y vendidas" (l. 2-3r) by Binyamin Abzardil (or Abzaradel). The heading on the verso suggests that this list is a compilation of the entries in Abzardil's own recordkeeping over a period of two years: "conforme todo en sus libritos ke komiensan del 26 Kislev shanat [5]503... [5]505" (l. 3-4r). On the right side of the verso, where the list begins, all values are listed in silver medin coinage (abbreviated "מאי") and this may be the case for all values listed.
