Description

Legal fragment. In the hand of Ḥalfon b. Menashshe (1100–38 CE). Involving a betrothal (erusin); the appointing of a representative, Ḥalfon ha-Levi; the mother of the bride, ʿAshīra bt. Avraham; the mother giving 6 out of her 12 shares in a house in al-Mamṣūṣa to her daughter; the condition that the groom not host weddings "or do anything from the ornaments (? zakhrafāt) of the Egyptians/Cairenes." Includes a travel condition which forces the husband to write a conditional bill of divorce before he goes to a business trip to 'Yemen and the far away places'. Goitein's index card says that the date is Sivan 1121 CE, but the date does not appear to be preserved. On verso there are a few words from an Arabic state document, one of Ḥalfon b. Menashshe's rare reuses (or is it unique?) of a state document. Join: Alan Elbaum.
