Description

Fragment of a letter opening from Sherira Gaʾon, in Baghdad, to Efrayim b. Ṣadoq (aka Efrayim b. Ṣedaqa al-Muʿallim), in Fustat. Dating: ca. 980, according to Gil. Begins with a mention of ʿAmram b. Mishuy, the maternal uncle of Sherira (he may in fact be the sender rather than Sherira). The addressee was a notable of the Babylonian community of Fustat in the second half of the 10th century; see BL OR 5550.1 (PGPID 19202). The Arabic address on verso states that the letter should be sent to the [...] hospital in Fustat, to a physician, to be delivered to Efrayim b. Ṣedaqa.
