You love justice and detest iniquity, therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of joy, preferring you to your companions (Psalms 45:8).
To the seasoned scholar, the charming teacher, and lucid speaker, pure of heart and blameless in conduct, who gathers for himself merits to be rewarded in this world and the World to Come; may his Creator increase his worldly possessions and surround him with his guardian angels; may law and ordinances be learned from his mouth when he sits down to teach and stands up to judge; may the mighty God protect him from error and lead him on a smooth path in honor and beauty, him, our master and teacher rav Jacob, the member of the Great Sanhedrin [Council], may our Creator increase his distinction and grant him fame and glory. [ . . . ]
I inform you that I long to see your splendorous face, to listen to your delightful talk, and to enjoy your conversation. I worried when I heard that you had traveled from Aleppo, leaving the company of good and learned people. I had also assumed that you would be coming here, as I learned from travelers, and hoped that our God would present me with the opportunity to return you a little of the hospitality with which you received me in Miṣrayim [Fustat] and in particular my son during his illness, you and the people [lit., men] of your house. Also, when he visited Aleppo last year, you were very kind to him, assisted him in his affairs, hosted him, and pampered him with delicacies. May the King of Glory repay you for all you have done, and grant us the ability to reciprocate at least a little, commensurate with the respect in which we hold you. May he keep and preserve you, prolong your life, make your light luminous and keep away from you all that you dread, but let you enjoy prosperity as it is written: The Lord will let you enjoy prosperity (Deuteronomy 28:11).
When the festive tidings reached us that you built your house on sound foundations in the midst of our pious and noble masters of the community of Aleppo, we were extremely happy for you and for them that such a wise and prudent man should be in their midst. May God make them happy with you and you with them and bless all your undertakings.
I had written before to your honor, but had not seen any answers. It is well known that you are very busy teaching the two laws [Written and Oral—Ed.] and exercising your profession. Moreover, you were occupied with the financial arrangements connected with your wedding. May He who ordains marriages give you from your wife sons who occupy themselves with the Torah. We explained the absence of your answer by your multiple occupations. Or perhaps you have sent us letters and they fell into the hands of people who do not wish me well and hid them. [ . . . ]
When the travelers returned, letters of renewal of my installation were sent to me with R. Ezekiel the Babylonian from our lord Hezekiah, the Head of the Diasporas of all Israel, and from Hay, the head of the yeshiva, may their Rock [God] keep and reward them, and also in the name of the former heads of the yeshivas. Had it not been for pressure of time, I would have made copies of the letters of renewal and sent them to your honor since I know how much you love me, so that you may partake in my happiness. [ . . . ]
May your well-being increase and flourish. And may the end be good.
Elijah, ha-Kohen, Court, son of R. Abraham [may his] s[oul] r[est in] c[omfort] [in the] b[urial place of God’s] s[cribe] [Moses] (Deuteronomy 33:21).

Blessed are you who have fixed your domicile among God-fearing, law-abiding, and charitable people. You are lucky with them and they with you. But here I must try to keep the balance between the two denominations, the Rabbanites and Karaites, for these, too, are under my jurisdiction together with the Rabbanites. I try to tutor both, sometimes by pressure, sometimes by mild reproach, and occasionally by force and coercion. Last week I recovered a house from particularly mischievous extortionists, after they had appropriated it for thirteen years, and won it back for an orphan girl. One of these extortionists began to use bad language against me. The matter was reported to the ruler of the country—not by me, but by others and some of their opponents in court. The ruler sent a policeman after me to come to see him; it is the custom that I present myself to him together with the Muslim chief judge, their other judges, and the notables of the city every Monday and Thursday and, in addition, whenever there is any need or any plea for our people, I am never prevented by the doorkeepers from seeing him. Thus, when I appeared in the palace, the king said to me: “What is this that I have heard that one of the . . . cursed himself and you did not inform me.” He immediately sent policemen to apprehend him and wrote down a public announcement to be read in the bazaars and the streets that anyone who would hide him would forfeit all his possessions and he himself would be executed. The king ordered his house and store to be sealed. When his relatives realized that evil was determined against him by the sovereign, they came to me and entreated me, lest he perish. I understood and was afraid that he would be . . . and flogged, therefore I made a public announcement, as is their usage, and entreated the ruler not to harm him. [ . . . ]
I wrote you all this, my dear friend, that you should know the troubles I have with them. May the end be good.
