Description

Two sets of bifolios from an ʿilm-i ḥal manual in Ottoman Turkish. Dating: possibly sixteenth-century or later (per Hathaway). In the introduction to her edition, Jane Hathaway notes: "These two undated documents appear to comprise different sections of a single work of ʿilm-i ḥāl (Arabic, ʿilm al-ḥāl), a ‘primer’ of Muslim practice, written in simple Turkish, for converts to Islam, as well as long-time Muslims who might not be thoroughly versed in accepted Muslim practice, such as women, young people, isolated rural populations, and soldiers.... The language of the sections of T-S Ar. 39.153 dealing with prayer is quite similar to that of the ‘Rules of Prayer’ (Şurūṭ-i ṣalāt) section of Üstüvānī’s Risāle; however, the Genizah document lacks any references or allusions to religious authorities. Most well-known ʿilm-i ḥāl works, in contrast, incorporate numerous references to authoritative treatises on fiqh, or Islamic jurisprudence.... Linguistically, the obvious difference between the Genizah ʿilm-i ḥāl and these well-known Ottoman Turkish examples is that these popular specimens use the form secd-i sehiv for ‘invalidation of prayer’ while the Genizah document uses sehv-i secde. This may indicate that the Genizah documents draw on a different, perhaps little-known, work of ʿilm-i ḥāl. On the other hand, the author, or at least the calligrapher, may have stripped out the practical guide- lines from one or more of these better-known, more elaborate works. The four folios of T-S Ar. 39.153 form a partial ‘pamphlet’ on two subjects common to this genre: (1) şurūṭ-i ṣalāt (Arabic, shurūṭ al-ṣalāt), ‘rules of prayer’, and more specifically what er- rors in practice invalidate prayer, and (2) elfāẓ-i küfr (Arabic, alfāẓ al-kufr), the utterances, whether intentional or accidental, that throw one into unbelief. As Tijana Krstić points out (2019, 84), inclusion of elfāẓ-i küfr in ʿilm-i ḥāl works appears to be an innovation of the Süleymanic era; thus, this Genizah document must date from that period or later." (Hathaway, Ottoman-Era Documents from the Cairo Geniza, 338-342) NB: For exact line numbering and ordered pagination, consult Hathaway's edition directly. The pagination in the PGP is based on the order of the images/fragments rather than the original manuscript's pages. Lines that are combined in Hathaway's translation (e.g. ll. 3–5) have been disaggregated in the PGP version (l. 3, l. 4, l. 5) so that they align properly with the transcription.
