Description

Bitter letter by a public officer complaining about his lot. The sender's name is not preserved. Refers to Rabbenu; acknowledges receipt of a letter from Avraham ha-Dayyan; there is a letter enclosed for Abū Naṣr; and greetings to Yeshuʿa and Nissim and Natan. Goitein's translation of ll. 6–14: "I am most miserable. Some envy me, others despise me; others, again, are hostile. I have trouble from them all. God is my witness, would I know any profitable occupation bringing two dinars a month, I would not have touched the service of the Jews. Now, letters have their pitfalls; so please excuse me for writing this. You remember that I have come here at your advice, "if it displeases you, I shall go back" [cf. Numbers 22:34] They have torn my honor to pieces . . . I sit alone in my house, which is empty of everything. "But God is there" [Ezekiel 35:10]."
