Description

Letter/petition to a notable in Judaeo-Arabic. Begins with a taqbīl clause in the name of a woman (al-mamlūka tuqabbil al-arḍ) but the inhāʾ is masculine (wa-yunhī...), maybe a scribal slip. Ends, "[al-mamlū]ka zawjat ʿOvadya al-Ḥalabī," meaning "the wife of ʿOvadya the Aleppan," who is probably the petitioner. Mentions "our master" (sayyidnā), indicating that the addressee is a dignitary of some sort; a few of his titles are preserved in the upper part. The petitioner is in great distress and "naked," and if it weren't for the mouthfuls of bread received from the neighbors, she would have perished. Join: Alan Elbaum.
