Description

Letter in Hebrew from Yosef, a scholar with minimal assets and now in a perilous situation because of debts, dependents, and sureties on his behalf. He requests a donation and prays for his would-be benefactor with the expression, “May you never be ashamed in your life.” (Mark Cohen, Voices of the Poor, 74) EMS Previous description of T-S 10J15.18 before the join: Letter.   1. ] gave a hand to find
  2. relief from the hardship that found us. Now, therefore, my masters, bring contentment to my soul, assign me [...]
  3. the Creator to find favor in your eyes to call upon the people to help us and bestow aid upon us like one
  4. of the needy. For we are in dire straits on account of debts
  5. we have, child care, and sureties on our behalf. I, Joseph, come to bow down and entreat my masters: If you
  6. do kindness to people from all places, do so, too, to your slave. I know that you are aware
  7. of the difficulty scholars encounter finding food and supporting themselves. So,
  8. I come to remind your honors and may you be considered as those who bring first fruits. May the Rock of Israel
  9. be your succor and save you from all trouble and distress and grant you favor in the eyes of all
  10. who see [you], and may you never experience shame or disgrace in your lifetime. May there be fulfilled through you the verse referring to the "Seven weeks,"

  11. "I will bring them to My sacred mount and let them rejoice in my house of prayer," etc. (Isaiah 56:7), with all Israel included
