Mark R. Cohen, The Voice of the Poor in the Middle Ages (Princeton University Press, 2005).
  1. In the name of the Compassionate
  2. [. . .]
  3. The noble community in Fustat, may their Rock bless them, and their Creator help
  4. them, a(men) n(esah) s(ela), knows that the duty of charity is a great thing in the
  5. eyes of Him, the ex(alted). This is especially so when the person is scholarly
  6. (lit., possesses the fragrance of Torah) and is on his way to Jerusalem the Holy
  7. City, (may it be) r(ebuilt) and (established) during your lifetime and the lifetime of all
  8. Israel. Through the beneficence of the community, may they be blessed, I hope
  9. they will strive to take up a collection in the synagogues for the bearer of this
  10. letter, the elder R. David, (may) God b(e his succor). Do not deprive him of
  11. something since he prays in thanks for your charitableness. May God the
  12. ex(alted) not put you in need, but rather make you “givers rather than takers.” I
  13. hope you expedite this and g[iv]e him what you collect so that he can set out
  14. with the caravan. [It will be] to your merit [as an act of righteousness (charity)] (cf.
  15. Deuteronomy 24:13). May God the ex(alted) affirm through you the verse [“May
  16. the Lord, the God of] your fathers increase your [numbers a thousandfold,” etc.]
  17. (Deut. 1:11). And peace.

margin

Do not hold him back for he is all ready for the journey.
