Description

Business letter from Meʾir Ben-Naʿim to his son David Ben-Naʿim, in Alexandria. Dated: 20 Sivan 5400 + 179 = 5579 AM = June 1819 CE. In Judaeo-Arabic. Describing travels and mentioning people such as Se. Mishmish and Ibn Bibas— who may have been traveling from Rosetta to Cairo on the Nile (al-baḥr). Meʾir reports that David's brother Moshe is going to "al-Qalʿa" (the Citadel) to classify coinage. The address includes the standard ופגין נחש = ופורץ גדר ישכנו נחש; the ן is stylized (to look like a snake?). (MCD with information in part from Wagner, Linguistic Variety of Judaeo-Arabic)
