Description

Recto: two documents. The first (bottom) is an order for delivery of dues to the office of land tax (dīwān al-kharāj) written by the accountant Abū Musabbiḥī Abū l-Qāsim al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥusayn, in which it is stated that Abū l-Ḥasan Mājid b. Yaʿqūb shall deliver to the land-tax office the dues that he received from Wasly b. Maymūn and that went through the hands of Abū Qalā ʿAbd al-Raḥmān […], Zakariyā b. Mukhtār, ʿAlūn b. Ḥanūn (the clerk), Ṣayfī b. Rashīd and Qolte b. al-Sarrī (surveyors). Dated: 423 AH, which is 1031/32 CE. The second document (top, 90 degrees) is a receipt issued by a tax officer testifying that he has received the total payment by the aforementioned Abū l-Ḥasan Mājid b. Yaʿqūb. This receipt is written in the form of a declaration: yaqūl ʿabd mawlānā.... On verso and on the left margin of recto, there is a homily in Judaeo-Arabic and Hebrew. (Information from CUDL and Khan.)   1. Let it be registered in the land tax office and the (departments) attached to it,
  2. and where similar documents are registered, if God wills.
  3. It has been registered. Praise be to God for his bounties.
  4. In the name of God, the merciful and compassionate.
  5. ʾAbū al-Ḥasan Mājid ibn Yaʿqūb, the broker, may God support him, shall deliver from the total of the dues that
  6. he received from Wasly ibn Maymūn what was purchased from his tax-farm, Minyat Maymūn, for the solar year
  7. four-hundred and twenty-one, which passed to Bū Qalā ʿAbd al-Raḥmān
  8. Zakariyāʾ ibn Muḵtār, when two nights remained of Šawwal, in the year four-hundred and twenty-three, 
  9. to ʿAlūn ibn Ḥanūn, the clerk, and Ṣayfi ibn Rāšid and Qolte ibn al-Sarrī, the two surveyors,
  10. this being written by Musabbiḥī ʾAbū al-Qāsim al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ḥusayn, a noble accountant. He, may God support him, shall pay it 
  11. to the office through their agency, by his delivering (it) to them, so that he may  dispose of the seed-advance.. [              ]
  12. [                    ] cultivation, in the year four-hundred and twenty-two
  13. [                               ] ninety-two [             ]

Recto (Document 2)

  1. In the name of God, the merciful and compassionate.
  2. The slave of our master, the blessings of God [be upon him ] states:
  3. that I rceived from Mājid ibn Yaʿqūb [                        ]
  4. from the total of my monthly dues, for the year four-hundred and twenty-three [                       ]
  5. The receipt of six-hundred and twenty-three. The receipt of [ ] and ten
  6. and I released him from that, with a quittance of full receipt. This was written on  his behalf, by his instruction, and it was registered [              ]
  7. in the first ten days of Ḏu al-Ḥijja, of the year four-hundred and twenty three.
  8. Praise be to God and his blessings be upon his prophet Muḥammad and his family [and save them.] 
  9. Our sufficiency is God. What a fine keeper is he!
