Description

Recto: Legal document. Location: al-Maḥalla. Dated: middle third of Av 1481 Seleucid (= July/August 1170 CE), with the signing delayed until the middle third of Elul 1481 Seleucid (= August/September 1170 CE). Detailing one of the contributions to a pesiqa (fundraising drive) conducted by [Aharon?] ha-Levi and Ḥalfon ha-Neʾeman on behalf of Moshe Maimonides for the ransom of captives. In particular: Hiba b. Elʿazar appointed al-Shaykh al-Thiqa [...] b. Yehuda ha-Kohen Keter ha-Kohanim as his agent to sell his female slave Nasrīn. Of the proceeds, Hiba earmarks 9 dinars to be contributed to the drive. Witnesses: Aharon b. Yaʿaqov ha-Melammed ha-Levi; Netanʾel b. Ḥalfon; Shemarya b. Avraham. Interestingly at least two of these witnesses (Aharon and Shemarya) were active in Fustat rather than al-Maḥalla based on their other Geniza documents.
