Description

Recto: Drafts of legal deeds, with places and dates left unspecified. In Hebrew and Aramaic. Dating: ca. mid-11th century. The first entry is a deed of gift in which Bahiyya bt. Yūsuf Ibn ʿAwkal gifts her slave Nujūm the Byzantine (אלאדומיה), whom she had received against a debt on her late husband Mawhūb b. Manṣūr Ibn Qurayṭa al-Kohen to her husband's relative Yosef b. Bishr Ibn Qurayṭa. The second entry is a deed of manumission in which Yosef b. Bishr releases Nujūm. The husband had originally received Nujūm from his sister Fāḍila bt. Manṣūr; for no clear reason, her name appears at the bottom of the document in a different hand (likely identical with the second hand on verso). Verso: Summaries in Judaeo-Arabic of the contents of recto, or perhaps instructions for drawing up the final legal deeds. In two different hands. (Information in part from VMR and Gil, Kingdom, Vol. 2, #224.)
