Description

Bifolio of accounts in Judaeo-Arabic with western Arabic numerals and Hebrew alphanumerals. 16th- or 17th-century based on the paleography and layout. A variety of individuals and groups are listed, such as: Muṣtafa Çavuş, ʿAlī Hersek Çavuş, Muḥammad Çavuş, and "al-ṣayarīf" (the ṣarrāfs). The term "çavuş" was commonly used as a military rank and one of the seven Ottoman military regiments of Cairo were the "Çavuşan." Requires further examination. MCD.
