Description
Verso: A note concerning the legal case on recto written several months later by a Muslim qāḍī, Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Ḥamdūn. Dated: Rabīʿ I 434 AH (October/November 1042 CE). He states that the judge (al-dayyān) Yūṣuf b. Sulaymān (Yosef b. Shelomo) and the cantor (al-ḥazzān) Sahl b. Mūsā (Shela b. Moshe) testified before him that the prior betrothal of Sitt al-Dār to Khulayf b. Yeshuʿa Nārūz had been conditional and that her marriage to a different man is licit. Frenkel believes that the Muslim judge made an error in recording the name "Yūsuf b. Sulaymān" and that this is actually the judge Yosef b. Yeshuʿa, active in Alexandria during this period. However, there was also a judge Yosef b. Shelomo (see T-S 24.29 (PGPID 7567)), who may in fact have been the father of Yeshuʿa b. Yosef ha-Kohen (see ENA NS 17.7 (PGPID 11722) and related documents). (Information in part from Frenkel, CUDL, and Goitein's index card.)
