Description
Accounts in Hebrew and western Arabic numerals. Dated in line 2 of the lower section on the recto: Adar I 5337 AM (1577 CE). The same section mentions Safed and a certain Reʾ[ube]n De Leon. The accounts reference 'the fattoria' several times, probably referring to the mercantile arrangement of 'factors/fattores' representing an employer. Currencies: real/reales (spelled ריאליץ) and עוט׳, an abbreviation of ʿUth[mānī] with a slightly different orthography. The latter term was a synonym for Ottoman silver akçe. One of the brief entries on the left column of the verso mentions R. Bu-l-ʿAfiyya, a variant of the surname Abulafia. Some of the accounts utilize symbols resembling the "<" and "÷" in contemporary mathematics but their meaning in the context of these calculations is unclear. Requires further examination. MCD
