Description

State document, Ayyubid period. Petition to an Ayyubid ruler regarding the appointment of military personnel: ʿUmar b. Masʿūd, leader of the archers in Alexandria of long experience (since the day of al-Kāmil) is asking that two boys he trained be employed in his unit. Mid-13th century. On verso are the Hebrew piyyuṭim במה אקדם ומה אמר אליך and Abraham ibn Ezra, אם רח אבנים כחי, and a draft of the basmala and tarjama of the document on recto. (Information from CUDL)

  1. بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

  2.                المملوك عمر بن مسعود مقدم الرماة

  3.               القوسية ثغر الاسكندرية المحروسـ[ـة]

  4. يقبل الارض وينهى انه مستمر على تقدمة طايفة من الرماة من الا[يام]

  5. الكاملية الى الان وقد انشا المملوك ولدين رماة وهم بطا[لـ]ـيـ[ـن]

  6. دون جامكية وسئال المملوك من صدقات مولانا [ا]عز الله نصره

  7. استخدامهم فى طايفة المملوك واجراه على [        ]

  8. انعام علي المملوك واحسان اليه والراي اعلا

  1. In the name of God, the merciful and compassionate. 

  2. The slave 'Umar ibn Mas‘ūd, the leader of the archers 

  3. in the frontier city of Alexandria, the guarded,

  4. kisses the ground and reports that he has been the leader of a unit of archers continuously since the days

  5. of al-Kāmil until the present. The slave has trained two boys to be archers. They are unemployed,

  6. without any income. The petition of the slave from the charities of our master, may God strengthen his victory,

  7. is to employ them in the unit of the slave and to appoint him ... [ ]

  8. as a kindness to the slave and a benefaction to him. The resolution (of the master) is most exalted.

  9. If God wills, the exalted.
