Description

Commercial accounts. In Judaeo-Arabic. Late. Listing many names and goods– mostly of which are clothing or fabric items. Some of the spellings and surnames are uncommon. Many of the names referenced in the subheadings are women: Sitt Sutayt, Shūl or Sol al-Ḥāshr (Sol from Ladino), Sitt Mansūba wife of Avraham Mdūr(?) (מדור), bint Hermoza daughter wife of Naḥmias, Sitt Mansūba named Sarah wife of Qatiya(?), the house of Esther כהוני(?) Umm Qamūr, Umm Yaʿaqov אלעברה, Sitt Bensūba, Masʿūda al-Videria (אלבידירייה), Esfransa (אספרנסה), Miryam, Yosef al-Shāmī, Rana Ashkenaziyya. The format of these accounts is possibly related to dowry lists, but more likely clothing/cloth production and commerce in these goods given the number of people mentioned. One of the items in the middle of the first bifolio is a "buqshā shaṭranjī" (chess bundle cloth) probably referring to a grid-based geometric design on the cloth and possibly one that could even function as a chessboard.
