Description

Verso (secondary use): order addressed to the ʿarīf al-ʿaṭṭārīn ordering a half-ounce of saffron for the bustān of al-Malik al-Ṣāliḥ. Comparison with Moss. IXa,2.37 (PGPID 36524) shows that this must refer to the Ayyubid sultan (r. 1240–49) rather than the Fatimid vizier Ṭalāʾiʿ b. Ruzzīk, and comparison with ENA 3971.6 (PGPID 10772) shows that the stylized word in l. 4 is more likely li-bustan than dīnār. Written on Monday, the 16th of Jumādā II. The signature and date are written in a different hand than the main text. According to al-Maqrīzī, this bustān was purchased by al-Malik al-Ṣāliḥ in Rajab 643 AH = Nov–Dec 1245. Therefore, the viable years during the reign of al-Malik al-Ṣāliḥ when 16 Jumādā II fell on Monday (accounting for the usual error of plus/minus one day) are 1246 and 1248.
