Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

A third possibility which Goitein does not mention—it may refer to the Muʾminī dinars minted by ʿAbd al-Muʾmin, the founder of the Almohad dynasty, and this exchange rate of 52.67:100 would be plausible based on information from Ibn Jubayr (e.g. https://shamela.ws/book/11203/26). If this is the correct reading, the letter probably dates to around the second half of the 12th century.

Accounts in a mixture of Ladino and Judaeo-Arabic. The dating is post-1517, 16th- or 17th-century, based on the paleography and mention of Ottoman titles. Many of the accountentries are terse, bearing solely names and numerical figures, but the second line of the recto states in Ladino: "el muchacho de Qāsim Beğ" (איל מוגאגו די קאסם ביג). Several other entries on the recto also name individuals with the Ottoman title çavuş, such as: Muḥammad Çavuş and Ferḥat Çavuş.

The figures for entries are alphanumerical and on the recto the first heading is labeled "אלמביע" indicating a sale perhaps to various individuals, among them "Yehuda al-Qara / יהודה אלקרה" is mentioned (l.2r). Similar to this fragments join, we also find a heading on the recto where "masruf/משרופ" (l.10r) appears in indicating expenses (though it's important to note that this is a less common spelling given that the word is often rendered "מצרופ" in Judeo-Arabic).
