Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

He then writes (it seems) that he and his party will also be setting sail soon, presumably to Yemen or India, and may God preserve them. […] He concludes again with regards to al-Muʿallim al-Malījī and Abū Naṣr and the family of Dāwud. The first two words of the address are difficult to decipher: to madīnat al-[...]? or to sayyidat al-gharb? al-ʿarab? In any case, the letter is to be delivered to the shop of Abū l-Khayr b.

  12. 1612رسالةMoss. Ia,11

A letter in stylishly rhyming Judaeo-Arabic addressed to Abu Sahl and his three sons, Abu l-Mansur, Barakat, and the boy Abu l-Fadl. The writer is likely named Abu Zikri (see line 12 of verso), which, along with the handwriting and elevated register, suggests that this is the well-known son of Eliyyahu the Judge. […] Everyone in the house is also helping his wife, who is in the state that God knows (often a figure of speech for illness). His daughter is starting to recognize everyone in the house, including visitors, and also serves her mother. Recto 22 – Verso 30: Following these pleasant updates, the remainder of the letter is a blistering tirade against Barakat who affects intelligence but whose brain produces only "mucus, delirium, and madness [al-mukhāṭ wa-l-hadhayān wa-l-khubāṭ].”

It may have been drawn up in North Africa and later transported to Cairo, or it may have been acquired in North Africa.... The couple are ʿAlī ibn Ḥadwā (‘the north wind’, or Boreas) and al-Zahrāʾ (‘the most radiant’) bint Aḥmad. They are certainly Muslim, though ʿAlī and Zahrāʾ are also attested as Jewish names in the ‘classical’ Genizah. ʿAlī is a cognate of the Hebrew Eli, the most common male name in the medieval Genizah.

In the Kitāb al-Masālik wa-l-mamālik (2: 676), al-Bakrī mentions a bāb al-qallālīn in Qayrawān as well as the bāb ʿAbdallāh, which is one of the earliest Eastern gates of Qayrawān not far from the Great Mosque, near the bāb al-qallālīn. The text is very faded, but some information can be extracted: Avraham found either ʿIwāḍ or his wife or at least people who knew him and threatened to place a ban on him the next day under the authority of the Nagid, unless he paid up the 120 silver pieces that he owed—but ʿIwāḍ refused.
