Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.

The first entry is a payment made to Naṣr the mawlā of Ibn al-Zubayr. Goitein writes, "Ancient accounts of a Tunisian merchant, specifying goods sent on camelback to Tripoli, Libya, and others sent by ship from Tripoli via Tunis to Palermo, Sicily." 4 pages on parchment, large childlike letters, erratic spelling, influenced by the local dialect.

[…] The sender checked the accounting in the "tawqīʿ" (typically a term for a government decree/rescript but this appears to be a different usage) and confirms that the addressee still has a credit of 3 fīlīs and 2 fanams corresponding to 3 Malikī dinars.
