Marriage contract (ketubba) in the Palestinian style. Location: Tyre. Dated: August 1079 CE. Groom: Ḥalfon b. Aharon. Bride: Ghāliya bt. Musāfir. Early: 2 dinars. Late: 10 dinars. Dowry: 17 and 3/4 dinars [though the scribe mistakenly wrote 16 and 3/4]. In the hand of the ḥaver ʿAmram b. Ṣedaqa (see also T-S AS 150.230, T-S 16.136, T-S AS 156.394, and T-S AS 150.230). Edited by both Gil and Friedman. (NB: Friedman's book refers to the fragment as ENA 4101.36)

- By the name of our Creator. May they build and prosper.
- On the fifth day (of the week), the seventh day of the month of Elul, which is four thousand,
- eight hundred and thirty-nine years [A.]M., this marriage contract [was written]
- in the city of Tyre, which is on the coast of the [great] sea. [Ḥalfōn b. Aa]ron, (whose) s(oul is at) r(est), [came] and said,
- intentionally and will[ingly ...]
- [...]
- in the manner of Jewish men, who [nou]rish, [su]stain, and [...]
- and honor their wives faithfully. And this Ghāliya [...] listened to him (accepted his proposal)
- and consented to be married to him and to esteem and honor him, to attend and to serve [him in the manner of]
- respectable women, the daughters of Israel, who esteem, honor, attend, and serve
- their husbands in purity and cleanness. This Ghāliya appointed her brother, Ḥalfōn b. Musā[fir],
- to be her agent for the receipt of her qiddush (betrothal gift) from the hands of this Ḥalfōn b. Aaron.
- And she willingly consented to all he does concerning her match and what he stipulates on behalf of her and as an obligation upon her. And there testified
- to her two witnesses, who are acquainted with her. The mohar that this Ḥalfōn, the groom, set
- for this Ghāliya, the bride, is twelve dinars. Two dinars he gave as a first payment [...]; and there remain
- incumbent upon him ten perfect, weighed dinars, of the dinars of the state, delayed as a debt upon him,
- sound and firm. She has no right to claim of them one peruṭa as long as he
- is alive and she is under his jurisdiction and he fulfills her three needs. But if he hates her without
- any misconduct (on her part) and does not fulfill her three needs, he shall pay them to her, viz. the balance of her mohar, of
- twelve dinars, and release her with a bill of divorce. And these are what she brought with her from the Merciful and from
- the house of her fathers: a pair of gold earrings—2 dinars, a wrap—2 dinars, a coat made of different materials—
- ¼ dinar, a skullcap—1 dinar, a skullcap and a gown—2 dinars, a "half-garment" and a slip—
- 2 dinars, a wrap— 1 ½ dinars, three Ṭabarī cushions and a pair of ʿAbbadānī mats—
- 1 dinar, a chest and a bench—1 dinar, a basin and a pitcher—1 dinar, a lamp—
- 2 dinars, and gold—2 dinars. The sum total is 16 dinars and ½
- dinar and ¼ dinar. And they are for her and her son after her. And if she passes away without leaving
- sons or daughters by him, what remains will be divided into two equal portions.
- One portion will be acquired by her husband, and the other portion will return to the house of her fathers. And with this
- understanding, the two sides stipulated and agreed between themselves concerning hate and love
- and life and death and all the stipulations of the Torah and the court stipulations from beginning to end. And they took
- upon themselves the obligation of this marriage contract according to the stringencies of all valid documents,
- verified in court, not like promises and not like formularies. And we performed with them
- a complete qinyan, with an implement fit for doing so, on all that is written and specified
- above. This marriage contract is established, verified, and trustworthy wherever it is produced and read,
- whether according to the laws of the nations of the world or according to the statutes of our lords, the sages. May they build and prosper.
