India Book III,17: Deed of manumission for Ashū, an enslaved woman (shifḥa) in the Tuḷu region of the Malabar coast. Avraham Ibn Yijū wrote this deed shortly after his arrival in Mangalore. Upon her manumission, Ashū receives the new name of Berakha. As is customary with converts, she also receives the patronymic bt. Avraham (i.e., daughter of the biblical patriarch Avraham). Dated: 6 Marḥeshvan 1444 (17 October 1132). On the verso and on the margins of the deed Ibn Yijū copied drafts of 3 poems for Maḍmūn b. Ḥasan of Aden (See II, 40). Both Goitein and Friedman suggest that Ibn Yijū bought Ashū so that he could release her and then marry her. He must have purchased her very soon after arriving in Mangalore. This deed is especially important for the 'reshut' clause, written in India, and mentioning both Daniʾel b. [Ḥ]isday, the Exilarch in Baghdad and Maṣliaḥ b. Shelomo, the head of the Palestinian Yeshiva residing in Cairo.

- to which we are accustomed, in the city of of Manjarūr in the la[nd of In]dia,

- which is situated on the shore of the great sea, under the authority of our lord Daniʾe[l]
- the Great Nasi, the Exilarch of all Israel, son of our lord Ḥas[day]
- the Great Nasi, the Exilarch of all Israel, and under the authority of [our] gaʾon,
- Maṣliaḥ ha-Kohen, head of the Yeshiva of the Pride of Jacob, son of Shelomo ha-[Kohen],
- head of the Yeshiva of the Pride of Jacob, by the merit of Abraham our father, I,
- Avraham bar Peraḥya, (may he) r(est in) E(den), who is known as Ben Yijū, and (by) any name that I possess,
- I commanded and willed with the will of my soul, not being forced, with a whole heart
- and a willing soul, I have relinquished, freed, and liberated y[ou],
- you, Ashū, the maidservant (shifḥa), the convert, the Tuḷuva woman whom I had acquired with the best
- of [my] money from the house of your mistress. By any name and designation that you possess and have posssessed,
- my maidservant before now, and now I have freed, liberated, re[linquished],
- and released you, so that you shall be a free, self-governed woman. Behold, you are for [yourself].
- Behold, you are your own person. Behold, you are a free woman, with authority over yourself, like other
- free people. You have my permission to be called by another name, like a daughter
- of Israel. No person shall interfere with you forevermore, in my name and that of my heirs after me.
- This shall be your writ of freedom from me, a letter of release according to the law of Moses and Israel.
- Furthermore, we said to the aforementioned Avraham bar Peraḥya, (may he) r(est in) E(den), known as Ben Yijū:
- We effect this legal acquisition from you by means of a valid legal transfer (qinyan). He said yes, and we effected the transaction with Avraham bar Peraḥya, (may he) r(est in) E(den), known as Ben Yijū,
- with regard to all that is written and explained above, a complete transfer, with an implement fitting for legal transfer.
- What was before us we wrote and signed and gave to this Ashū the freed convert,
- daughter of Avraham (the biblical patriarch), may her name be called Berakha among the daughters of Israel, to serve her
- in her hand as a right and proof of [what is written] above, from now and forever. Everything (herein) is valid and cle[ar].
