Betrothal register (53b according to Friedman) between Manṣur b. [...] b. Yiṣḥaq b. Saʿīd b. Pinḥas to Zahara bt. Yaʿaqov haKohen the scribe. One of four fragments from the court ledger of the Babylonian congregation of Damascus (T-S 16.181, T-S AS 146.66, T-S NS 320.108, and T-S 12.592). Dated: 4693 AM (= 932/33 CE). This fragment contains four independent documents, nos. 53a-d. Documents 53a, 53b, and 53c are betrothal registers. Document 53d is a marriage contract, written at the time of the "nissuʾin." - On the 5th of the week, 16 days in the month of Adar I, year 3 of the sabbatical cycle, an interculated year, which is year
- 4,693 A.M., in Damascus, Manṣūr
- b. Isaac b. Saʿīd b. Pinhas gave the ring of security for Zuhra, the virgin, daughter of R. Jacob ha-Kohen, the scribe, according to
- the cus[tom of the] small [sy]nagogue of the Babylonians. They fixed the mohar between them at seventy gold pieces: twenty-
- five, the mohar of virgins, and the rest as an addition for mohar. And he advanced at the time of this security
- fifteen good, fully weighed gold pieces. And at the time that he marries her, he shall pay her thirty-five,
- the balance of the fifty. Rav Jacob, her father, accepted for her this ring of security, this [r]ing of security(!). He shall provide for
- her [needs] until the time of her marriage to her husband. Valid is this writ of betrothal in the laws (courts) of Israel. May they build and prosper.
- [Tw]enty delayed (gold pieces) are "on his neck." May he be built by her. Bishr [b.] Ismaʿīl
