Fragmentary letter in Judaeo-Arabic and Hebrew. Dating: probably late 11th or 12th century. The letter is quite difficult and written in an elevated register with learned quotations and allusions. Goitein comments, "We never know whether he is speaking in jest or in earnest." Some clues about the context of the letter are found toward the bottom: the sender praises God for returning "our master to the seat of his fathers," apparently referring to the current Head of the Jews (ll. 20–21); he rebukes the addressees for neglecting to convey his request to "our master," because otherwise the fatwā would not have been delayed so long ("unless there was some eclipse in the world... preventing me from seeing the dawn") (ll. 28–32); and he refers to "mawlāy al-meʿuelle" (l. 35). The first part of the fragment preserved here is a long, cryptic passage about a night filled with anxiety and insomnia, with each event of the night attached to a biblical verse. He concludes this passage by greeting the morning star "as one of the Arab poets said, 'The morning star was the khāqān of a band of Turks, it called out to the Negus and vanished'" (كان عمود الصبح خاقان معشر من الترك نادى بالنجاشي فاستخفى). At the end of the fragment preserved here, he says, "Do not rebuke me for quoting Arabic poetry after quoting the Torah. . . ." He compares the great works (athār) of Arabic poetry to the "tall tree" (אילן גדול) of Pesaḥim 112a (Rabbi Akiva: "If you wish to strangle yourself, hang yourself on a tall tree"; Steinsaltz: "this proverb means that if one wants others to accept what he has to say, he should attribute his statement to a great man").
