be obtained anywhere, and with him

also two rubāʿiyyas of sugar and raisins.

Take posession of all this from him. There arrived

everything that you had sent to Abū l-Khayr.

He has taken possession of it all. He bought

Egyptian fabric and went up into the highlands. He asked me

to ask you to take care of him by

sending whatever iron and cardamom he still has

and the entire balance to his credit.

Send him all this on the first ship

that leaves India. As for iron, this

year in Aden it was selling—all

kinds of iron—and in the coming year,

it will also be in demand in Aden, because

there is none of it left in the city. I have explained

this. Accept for yourself the best greetings,

and for your son and Bama the best,

most profuse greetings. Peace.

Please give Sūs Sītī,

Kinābtī, and Isḥāq the Bānyān my best

regards, and let them know of my longing for them.

Inform them on my behalf that, as for pepper

this coming year, its value—

the price per bahār—will be thirty dīnārs

and more than this. As for refurbished iron,

a bahār will be (worth) at least twenty dīn(ārs),

and the shiny iron that had been in the city

is entirely sold out. If they can, they should send

a ship from Mangalore and fill it with

any available pepper, iron,

cubeb, and ginger. It should set out at the beginning

of the season for the islands (al-diyyab < Sanskrit or Malayalam dvīpa, "islands") to pick up a little

coir, fine aloeswood, mango (?), and coconuts,

since all these are in demand. If

they manage to fit out (a ship) in Aden and they want my

partnership, I will partner with them. Had there been

a ship setting out for Mangalore this year,

I would have sent them gold, sugar, raisins,

and (other) goods. Inform them of all this,

and do not be remiss, since you are a substitute for my letter.

[and I understood it, and I was happy to learn that you were well and your situation is in order. I thanked God for this v]ery much and asked [Him to give you more]

[of every] good thing. May God unite us

[under the most] joyful circumstances and in the best of spir[its, for He]

[is the master] of this and has the power to do it, if [God wills].

I attended to what [my] lord mentioned

about the sending of the two locks and the two thousand

white and red betel nuts. I have already taken possession

of it, and I thank you for your kindness and attending to it.

I have sent you with ʿAbd

al-Masīḥ the deacon a bundle of

Berbera mats, six mats.

We wrapped them in canvas, and your name is written

on them in Arabic and Hebrew script.

I have also sent you with him (a gift) from

me: a raw, high-quality, new Dabīqī scarf,

with a beautiful band on each side
