תיאור

Court record, calligraphically written, from a lawsuit about changing the configuration of the main hall of a house. During the dispute a Muslim judge was bribed. The intervention of Shemarya (b. Elhanan apparently), the rav, or highest Jewish religious authority, is requested. Dated ca. 1000. (Information from Mediterranean Society, IV, p. 84)

  3. [                       ] ... with me regarding my courtyard, which I bought from his father-in-law....[...] the land belonging to ... [                       ]
  4. [                         ] a deed written in the language of the Ishmaelites, signed in the gentile courts, validate[d                         ]
  5. [                         ] ... land, this passageway, without allowing him access to his chamber only. The main la[nd]
  6. [                         ] ... I [to]ld this Mevasser that while Yosef, your father-in-law, the father of this girl, was alive [                         ]
  7. [and] until the time of his death, he made no claim on this land. One time, I said to him, [                         ]
  8. [                         ] ... proof. I request from you that you sell from (!) me the right of way that you have. [                         ]
  9. blocks the entrance to this chamber, so that it will not be damaged. He/it blocked it, and behold, it is blocked. [                         ]
  10. justice, since the only access he has to this land is the right of way. He did not listen [                         ]
  11. He said, "I will accept only the land between my wife and you." Again, I said to him, "Let us go and get a judgment" [                         ]
