Description

Draft of a deposition about a shipment of Indian Ocean merchandise carried by two merchants who were killed in ʿAydhāb. Location: Fustat. Dating: ca. 1104 CE (Goitein). Hastily written by Rabbi Avraham b. Shemaʿya. The goods were mainly minerals and pharmaceuticals: an herb called fasfasya or fasfāsa; a variety of cardamom called qāqulla; Chinese jasper (dahnāj), a semi-precious stone; tutty (tūtiyā), an oxide of zinc made from the siliceous substance in bamboo stems (tabāshīr); fossils of crawfish from China (saraṭān, used as a collyrium); and aprons made out of asbestos (ʿaraḍ).
