Description

Lower part of a letter in the hand of Hillel b. ʿEli. Mainly in Judaeo-Arabic. He describes his great distress (poverty, dependents, fear from the tax collectors); emphasizes his loyalty to the addressee and that he prays for him every Shabbat after praying for the souls of the late 'adonenu' and his ancestors. He reports that he has already requested a favor from 'my master al-ḥemdat' Avraham b. Natan ha-Sheviʿi. The precise issue is unclear but it seems that somebody and/or a congregation have turned against him. He quotes Isaiah 65:1 in reference to himself (mistakenly attributing the verse to Jeremiah), "I gave access to them that asked not for me, I was at hand to them that sought me not; I said: 'Behold me, behold me', unto a nation that was not called by my name." In the margin, he says that he kisses the hand of the addressee. (Information in part from Goitein's index card.)
