Description

Letter from eight paupers, in debtors' prison, to Shemuel ben Sīd. Dating: ca. 16th century. The senders are Yosef Malili, David Maymūn, Ṣemaḥ הבהב, ʿEzer Politano, Yaʿaqov רובס, Shemuel Fuḥayma (? פוחימה), Yaʿaqov the blind (סגי ניהור), and Mordekhay ʿAmram ברגות). They are jailed for debts owed to gentiles. They mention R. Yosef Sagis (סאגיס), who brings food to the jail, however he is making matters worse by bringing them only cheese to eat, day and night. They appeal to the addressee for help. In the top margin and on verso there is a rabbinic commentary or halakhic text. (Information from Goitein's index card and FGP.)
