Description

Ketubba (marriage contract). In the hand of Ḥalfon b. Menashshe ha-Levi. Location: Fustat. Dated: Thursday, 17 Tevet 1436 Seleucid = 25 December 1124 CE. Blessings for Moshe (b. Mevorakh) Nagid ha-Gola appear in the header. Bride: Turfa bt. Natan, a divorcee. Groom: Ṣedaqa b. Yefet the cantor. The names of witnesses are not preserved. The appearance of the ketubba, which is decorated with fleurs de lis on the first line of the heading, is in contrast to the dowry of Turfa, who only has a dowry worth 5 dinars, making her one of the poorest women mentioned in the Geniza. The marriage payments are 5 + 10 = 15. (Information from CUDL and Goitein's index card.)
