Letter: Reinach I

Letter Reinach I

Description

A long and flowery communal, formal letter in Hebrew, addressed to the elders of the community of Malīj, probably from the leaders of the Jewish community of Fustāt (ממנו בית דין בשפריר קבוע מבין דין הגדול נטוע וממקצת הקהל הצנוע כאהלים תקוע). The letter is concerned with a dispute between two persons, which started in Malīj, dealt with by the elders there to the dissatisfaction of one of the parties, who then appealed to the court in Fustāt. The letter urges the local elders to reconsider the case, and especially the other party's use of non-Jewish courts. The letter occupies most the verso side of the manuscript. A blank space and a horizontal libe separates it from the next block of text (Reinach II).
