Description

Letter from Ḥāmid al-Kanzī to the Nubian eparch Uruwī in Ibrīm. The letter is primarily a letter of introduction for Saʿāda, who has been sent to carry out various tasks on behalf of Ḥāmid al-Kanzī. Ḥāmid describes Saʿāda as "my companion" and asks the eparch to make requests of him and show him "respect, kindness and polite hospitality," suggesting that this is a diplomatic mission requiring proper protocol. In the margin, Ḥāmid asks offers the eparch his services and expresses gratitude for the opportunity to fulfill his requests. MR Khan, Qaṣr Ibrīm, doc. 10.

  2. توجه اطال الله بقا صاحب الخيل ووزير الملك مته

  3. واكشيله اطال الله بقاه وادام سعادته وسلامته

  4. ونعمته و{لـ}ـحراسته صاحبي القائد سعادة وبعثته لقضى

  5. حوائج حملتهم اياه والانفاذ من الاكشيل من عينهم 

  6. خواصيهم على قضى حوائجهم وتسييره مطلبهم

  7. الى ان يكوننى شاكر من الاكشيل ولا سماحا 

  8.  يتحققه الاكشيل مما فعله الاكشيل مما يلزم 

  9. من الاكرام والاجمال من موانس القرابية من القائد سعادة

  1. In the name of God, the Merciful and Compassionate.

  2. May God prolong the life of the Master of the Horses, the vizier of the king

  3. and his Ikshīl, may God preserve his life and cause his happiness, his safety,

  4. his wellbeing and protection to endure. My companion, the leader Saʿāda, has set off. I have sent him to carry out

  5. various tasks that I have commissioned him to do. The Ikshīl is requested to send to specify

  6. the identity of the matters that need to be dealt with and send a request regarding them

  7. so that I am made grateful to the Ikshīl (for having the opportunity of carrying them out). There is no greater generosity

  8. performed by the Ikshīl than what the Ikshīl will have done with regard to the duty of

  9. showing respect, kindness and polite hospitality for the leader Saʿāda.

  3. Let him give instruction for it to be carried out and I would be grateful (for the opportunity to do the service),

  4. if God, the Mighty and Magnificent, wills.
