Description
Recto: Accounts in Judaeo-Arabic. Dated on the first of Tūt of the Ḥijrī year 1126 AH, (1715 CE). This unique dating system follows a fiscal-calendrical format that was common during the Ottoman era in Egypt whereby the ~11 days of the solar year that fell after the twelfth lunar month Dhū l-Ḥijja were assigned as the '"Tevâfut-u Tûtiyye" or the 'differential of Tût'" in Ottoman Turkish (Shaw, The Financial and Administrative Organization and Development of Ottoman Egypt, 216-217). Therefore, Tūt is not referenced here in terms of the Coptic calendar but rather official Ottoman usage. The heading of the accounts reads accordingly: "A list making known the account of copper from the first of Tūt, y[ear] 1126" (קאימה עלם חסאב אל נחאס מן אול תות ס ١١٢٦). In line three a member of the janissary garrison in Cairo is named: al-Emīr Ibrahīm Blbsh[?] Musṭaḥfiẓān // אלאמיר אברהם בלבש׳׳[?] מוסטחפצאן. The letters Blbsh[?] are likely an abbreviation of the Ottoman military title bölükbaşı = a regimental commander. MCD with information on the rank "bölükbaşı" provided by Jane Hathaway.
