Legal document Unknown private collection

Description

Legal document. The bottom part of a quittance from Fusṭāṭ, ca 1150s, in which the trader Abū l-Maʿālī Shemuʾel b. Yehuda Ibn Asad is released from any further obligation or debt by Sumr bt. Moshe and her son Abū l-Ḥasan. Because of debts that Sumr's late husband owed, she and her children hid from debt collectors in Shemuʾel's home until he settled the debts for them. This is a court record, and it is signed by Mevōrakh b. Natan he-Ḥaver (fl. 1150–1181 CE) and Yeḥezqel b. Natan, with the validation of Ḥiyya b. Yiṣḥaq, Efrayim b. Meshullam, and Hillel b. Ṣadōq Av Bet Din. Goitein describes and fully translates the documents in Med. Soc., 5:356–58, when it was in the collection of Daniel M. Friedenberg; it was sold at auction to another private collector in 2008.
