Description

Recto: Order in the handwriting of Moshe Maimonides. Addressed to a certain Abū l-Mufaḍḍal, instructing him to pay the bearer of this letter, named Yaʿaqov, who serves as a proxy for two notables—al-shaykh al-Asʿad and al-shaykh al-Thiqa—whatever amount of money he requires. Maimonides will compensate the addressee. Who was this al-shaykh al-Thiqa? During Maimonides’ lifetime, two people bearing this title are known. One was Maimonides’ father-in-law Mishaʾel b. Yishaʿyahu he-Ḥasid. The other one, probably the one intended here, was Yehuda b. Elʿazar ha-Kohen, a government secretary (kātib) in Minyat Zifta. Verso: In a different hand, draft of the opening of a deferential letter in Hebrew to a notable named Zakkay.
