Description

Report concerning the death of a Jew named Hiba b. Wafā (or Yehuda?), who drowned in the Nile in the last tenth of Ṣafar, AH 728/early January 1328. The death became known to the community “by widespread and much-bruited rumor.” The formula used here resembles those of the slightly earlier death reports edited by Khan in Arabic Legal and Administrative Documents in the Cambridge Genizah Collections, docs. 125–31. According to Khan, such reports “were presumably addressed to the [government] office of intestate successions” (ibid., 473). This is an incomplete draft.
