Description

Legal document in Hebrew, very damaged. Location: Cairo. Dated 16 ___[month missing] ___52 AM. Based on the paleography the year is most likely 5552 AM (1791/1792 CE), but this estimate needs to be confirmed through further examination of the names mentioned. Signed by Yaʿacov Arūkh and with a calligraphic scribal signature. In the opening lines of the document Yaʿacov Arūkh receives payment from Ḥanūna ____ (name lost to damage). The transaction is likely related to the long list of items between ll. 5-11: "muslin shirt" (קמצאן שאש), "blue satin cloth" (אטלס אזרק), "old chests" (סנאדק ישנה), etc. Based on the items mentioned it seems this may be a trousseau list– but the extent of damage makes it impossible to be certain.
